UPS Batteries: VRLA and Lithium-ion

The battery is the heart of any UPS system. It stores the energy that keeps your critical load running when the mains supply fails, so the battery you choose has a direct effect on runtime, footprint, maintenance and lifetime cost. We supply lead-acid and lithium-ion battery solutions for both single-phase and three-phase UPS systems.

Not sure which battery is right for your UPS? The best choice depends on how long you need your load to run during an outage, how much space you have, the temperature of the room and your budget over the life of the system. Speak to our team and we’ll help you choose, whether you’re specifying a new system or replacing batteries in an existing UPS.

Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are by far the most common choice for modern UPS systems based on their low maintenance, reliability, cost-effectiveness and well-established recycling infrastructure. Samsung SDI lithium-ion battery systems provide a battery solution that is more compact, lighter and more temperature resilient than VRLA systems, with faster discharge and recharge capabilities. The Vision REVO TP Series of battery systems offers a flexible lithium-ion alternative to traditional lead-acid VRLA batteries.

VRLA vs lithium-ion UPS batteries

  • Service life: VRLA batteries in UPS use typically need replacing every 3 to 5 years. Lithium-ion batteries commonly last 10 to 15 years, often matching the life of the UPS itself.
  • Space and weight: Lithium-ion takes up considerably less floor space and weighs less, which helps where room or floor loading is limited.
  • Temperature: VRLA batteries perform best at around 20 to 25°C, and higher temperatures shorten their life. Lithium-ion is more tolerant of warmer environments, which can reduce cooling costs.
  • Recharge time: Lithium-ion recharges faster, so your UPS is ready for the next outage sooner.
  • Cost: VRLA has the lower upfront cost. Lithium-ion costs more to buy but needs fewer replacements, which often makes it cheaper over the life of the system.

UPS battery maintenance and replacement

All UPS batteries degrade over time, and a failing battery often goes unnoticed until the power goes off. Regular testing as part of a maintenance contract helps spot weak cells early, and our engineers can replace and responsibly recycle batteries when they reach end of life.
